MagMap Work Around for 2007 and 2008 G-858 Data with incorrect time stamps

G-858 magnetometers built prior to January 2001 that have only one RS 232 input will incorrectly store the date and time in recorded survey files.

Geometrics have devised two methods of correcting these date and time stamps. You can send your instrument to Geometrics for installation of new firmware to prevent this problem in the future. You can also use a new copy of MagMap2000, Version 2.83b, with the procedure below to correct the date and timestamps in data already recorded by one of these instruments.

To correct data files recorded in 2007:

  1. Download and install MagMap2000, Version 2.83b, from Geometrics ftp site, ftp://geom.geometrics.com/pub/mag/Software/, The file is named, magmap-4.83b.exe
  2. Edit C:\Windows\MAGMAP2000.INI.
  3. In the [DEBUG] section of the file change the line:

858_TIME_CORRECTION=0.000

to

858_TIME_CORRECTION= 429496729.07

  1. Save the file; start MagMap2000; and open the G-858 file or download from the G-858.
  2. You will have to change the
    3. 858_TIME_CORRECTION= 429496729.07 line back to 858_TIME_CORRECTION=0.000 in order to process data from newer G-858 consoles or G-858 consoles that have had upgraded firmware installed.
