How do I run MagLog and MagMap in my Windows 7 machine? Does it matter if it is 32 bit or 64 OS?

Microsoft recently released 32 and 64 bit versions of their new operating system Win 7.  We like the OS and realize that many people will be upgrading from Vista or XP to take advantage of the new features.

MagMap and MagLog are compiled for the 32 XP OS.  We are in the process of recompiling these program over the next several weeks.  We will put these new versions of the software up on the FTP site as soon as they are tested and available.  MagLog and MagLogLite will not run “out of the box” on Windows 7.  However, we have a solution now and later we will have another more formal upgrade.

Solution to running MagLog on Win 7:

1.       Windows 7 has an option to download an XP Mode Virtual PC software from Microsoft.  It is large, approximately 500MB, but once downloaded, WIN7 gives you the ability to start a virtual PC in XP Mode.  Do this and install it.
2.       Once in XP Mode window, install the current MagLog from the Mag CD or from our website.  Note where the program will save the survey files!  You should probably put them on the Win 7   C:\ drive rather than on the virtual XP C:\ drive which would then not be available unless the Virtual XP Mode machine was up and running.
3.       Once the software is installed, put in the USB Dongle Key.  Then from the XP Mode header window, click on USB.  There you will see the USB Dongle.  Click on Attach.
4.       Find the Keyspan Serial to USB CD or download the latest drivers for the 4 channel Keyspan from Keyspan. Do not plug in the converter.  From XP Mode, install the drivers for the 4 channel Keyspan converter.  Note where the drivers are unpacked!  There will likely be two C drives, one in XP Mode and one in Win 7.  Keyspan typically wants to unpack the drivers on the C drive that is in Win 7.  That is fine but make sure you know where the drivers are installed, typically somewhere like C Drive on PC C:\keyspan.
5.       Once the Keyspan drivers are installed on the XP Mode (you may have to go through 4 separate installations procedures, one for each port), then go to the top header bar on XP Mode window and click on USB.  You should see Keyspan USA-49WG listed there.  Click on Attach.
6.       Then right click on My Computer, left click Properties, Device Manager, go down to Ports and confirm that you have 4 Keyspan ports listed, usually 3, 4, 5, 6.
7.       Once you see the ports listed there, you are good to start MagLogLite and set up or configure a new survey.

Current MagMap2000 should work as is in Win 7.  However, we are recompiling both MagMap and MagLog over the next few weeks and will probably have a Win 7, 32 bit or 64 bit final solutions sometime in February.  Nevertheless, using XP Mode has been tested and is a good work-around.
